You arrive on site with everything ready to start excavating. The plan is in place, equipment has arrived, permits have been approved, and you have a strong crew of trained professionals to break ground and get the project off to a great start.
In terms of identifying underground utilities, you’ve followed the standard procedures. You’ve used a “call before you dig” service, reviewed records, and marked the surface with information on each line, so operators know what to expect and can safely excavate around the infrastructure buried below.
But shortly after starting, the excavator hits something that was never supposed to be there.
No record. No mark. No warning.
Unknown, undocumented utilities are one of the most difficult excavation risks to manage. When underground infrastructure isn’t recorded properly or gets lost in the shuffle as databases are combined or modernized, it is like it never existed. But when an underground utility strike occurs, safety fallout, blown budgets, and missed deadlines definitely do exist.

The state decided to use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to map the underground environment across 230,000 square miles of Lombardy. The results found that the length of all the underground infrastructure detected was 34% longer than historical data, leading to thousands of miles of previously unknown utility lines being added to the records.
